I chose to become a Doula for so many reasons, but mostly due to the fact that at 26 weeks, I would go into preterm labor. My doula was the first person to get to me. In fact, she was the only person who could make it to me in this emergency situation. Looking back, I'm very thankful that I had somebody there with me, especially since it had been less than 6 weeks since she was hired. Knowing the role that my doula played for me increased my interest in becoming one. I wanted to play that same role for so many people that I know who have had to do this alone or felt alone even though their partner was present. I know that sometimes the people around us don't always know how to help us and as a doula I could also help them find their space in the journey as well.
Being a young black female millennial, I believe we have a heightened sense of community and wanting to help others. We are typically more aware of statistics and disparities that we encounter. Because of this maternal and infant death in black women has always been a soft spot for me. So, knowing the impact that a doula could have on decreasing, those numbers also created a desire in me to continue to do something like this.
